Which Primer Before Plastering? Getting Plaster to Stick

When a skim coat cracks, blisters or peels away in sheets, the plaster is rarely at fault. Nine times out of ten the wall underneath was never prepared properly.

What a primer actually does

Two different problems need two different products.

Absorbent surfaces suck water out of the plaster. Aerated block, old lime render, dry plasterboard and porous concrete pull the mixing water out before the plaster can cure, so it goes off powdery and never gains strength. The answer is a deep penetrating primer such as Cekol DL-80, which soaks in and evens out the suction.

Smooth surfaces give nothing to grip. Dense concrete, old gloss or emulsion paint, and tiles are the opposite problem: no absorption, no key. Here you want a gritty bonding primer like Cekol quartz sand primer, which dries to a fine sandpaper texture the plaster can hold onto.

The tests that take a minute

• The water test. Flick water at the wall. Soaks straight in? Absorbent, use a penetrating primer. Beads and runs? Smooth, use a bonding primer.
• The tape test. Press masking tape firmly on the surface and rip it off. If it comes away with dust or flakes of paint, the wall is not ready for plaster at any price.

Do not rush the drying

A primer that has not dried is a release agent. Give it the time on the datasheet, longer in a cold or unheated house. On a big job it is normally a case of priming one day and plastering the next.
