Joint Fillers & Wall Plasters: what to buy and how to use it

Everything between a bare board or blockwork and a wall that is ready for paint. The products here split into three jobs, and picking the wrong one is why a finished wall sometimes cracks a few months later.

Filling joints. Plasterboard joints need a filler that stays put without shrinking back. Cekol C-40 with fleece joint tape is the standard pairing, and the plasterboard joint guide explains why rushing coats is the usual cause of hairline cracks.

Levelling out. If a wall is out by more than a few millimetres, start with a levelling pass rather than trying to bury it in skim. Cekol GS-100 handles 1 to 10mm in one coat. For worse walls see the guide on an uneven wall before plastering.

Finishing. GS-200 is the straightforward gypsum skim. A-45 grips painted and mixed surfaces better on renovation work. F-16 and GS-250 are the dustless options, worth every cent in an occupied house.

Prime absorbent surfaces first and finish with the right sanding grit.
