Suspended Ceilings: what to buy and how to use it
The metal frame that carries a plasterboard ceiling. Get the grid right and the boards go on flat with no hollow spots; get it wrong and no amount of filler will hide the waves.
The UD 30 perimeter track fixes around the walls and sets the finished height. CD 60 profiles span between them at 400 or 600mm centres depending on board thickness and what the ceiling has to carry. Where the profile needs supporting off the structure above, use ceiling brackets in the 125mm version for a deeper drop, or the CD 60 hanger and levelling bracket where the level needs fine adjustment after the frame is up.
Suspended ceilings earn their keep in more than new builds. They hide services and pipework, drop a room that feels too tall, take recessed lighting without butchering joists, and add a useful layer of sound separation between floors.
Our step by step guide to setting out a CD and UD grid covers spacings, levels and the mistakes worth avoiding. Once the boards are on, the joint filling range takes it to a paintable finish.
