Choosing the Right Finish Plaster (Skim Coat) for Irish Homes

A perfect paint job starts with a perfect skim. But walk into any builders merchant and you will find a wall of bags - gypsum plasters, finish coats, evening-up mortars. Here is how to pick the right one.

Match the product to the job

New plasterboard

Fresh plasterboard needs only a thin skim. A gypsum finish like Cekol GS-200 spreads easily and sands to a glass-smooth surface. Tape the joints first, fill with a joint filler like Cekol C-40, then skim the full surface.

Uneven or old masonry walls

If the wall is out by more than a few millimetres, start with an evening-up layer. Cekol ZW-04 handles 2-20mm in one pass. Once flat, finish with a skim coat.

For deeper corrections (up to 10mm in one coat), Cekol GS-100 gypsum plaster is the workhorse - one product for levelling and finishing.

Repairs and renovation

For patching, chases and mixed surfaces, a flexible polymer finish like Cekol A-45 grips old paint and concrete better than plain gypsum.

Sanding without the dust cloud

Skimming a lived-in house? Cekol F-16 dustless finish is engineered so the sanding dust falls straight to the floor instead of hanging in the air - a lifesaver in occupied homes.

Don't skip the primer

Plaster failing to bond is nearly always a priming problem. On absorbent surfaces (plasterboard, aerated blocks) use a regular primer; on smooth or painted surfaces use a gritty bonding primer like Cekol quartz sand primer.

How much do I need?

As a rule of thumb, 1mm of skim over 1m² uses about 1kg of finish plaster:

Full 3-bed semi	~280 m²	28-30 bags

Pro tips

• Mix with clean, cold water - dirty buckets shorten working time
• Two thin coats beat one thick coat every time
• Use an abrasive grid on a float for a flat, scratch-free sand
• Prime before painting - fresh plaster drinks paint
